Designer Creates Fake Studio, Makes Fun Of Superficial ‘Design Lovers’
By Dorothy Tan, 17 Sep 2013
Graphic designer Amy West observed that there is an online community that practices design “with the understanding that the entire process consists solely of applying style to anything”.
This prompted her to start a satirical project titled “Grafik BS”—which actually stands for Grafik Bullshit—where she sets up a fake design studio that “creates” works based on the aesthetic qualities deemed so important by superficial “design lovers”.
Helmed by creative director Bjorn Svenson—who even sounds suitably Scandinavian—Grafik BS has an impressively prolific portfolio of poster designs that is completely fictional—the designs are based on trend tags provided on Trendlist and created by the website’s generator.
These computer-generated, essentially meaningless poster designs have received admiring attention, comments and even a job application from the online design community that values “style over substance”.
West has even gone so far as to shoot a funny video interview of the non-existent Bjorn Svenson, where he speaks about the importance of design trends and “nice things”.
This witty experiment is definitely a success.
