Ethereal, Otherworldly Photographs Of Massive Glacial Ice Caves In Alaska
By Dorothy Tan, 23 Sep 2013
Math teacher and hobbyist photographer Kent Mearig has been a resident of Juneau, Alaska for the past two decades—over the past few years, he has managed to capture a series of extraordinary shots of the stunning ice caves under Mendenhall Glacier, which lies 12-miles away from his hometown.
Featuring ethereal, otherworldly images of bright blue ice and streams of cold water flowing over rocks, these photographs look like they have been taken on another planet.
Lying underneath the massive 19-kilometer-long glacier, these caves make up a wonderful natural landscape that few people have the luck to witness.
Mearig’s images are so surreal and beautiful that many people have accused him of having digitally manipulated them—however, he maintains that “anyone who has actually visited a subglacial cave can vouch for the legitimacy of [his] photographs”.
