‘Offensive’ And ‘Racist’ Japanese Airline Ad Angers Westerners
By Thia Shi Min, 24 Jan 2014
The Japanese airline All Nippon Airways has been accused of stereotyping Westerners in their latest spot.
In the ad, two airline executives think of ways to “change the image of the Japanese people” as the airline was increasing its frequency of international flights from Tokyo.
As soon as this suggestion was brought up, the second executive is seen wearing a blond wig and a long nose—a stereotype that Japanese people often use to refer to Westerners.
Although the ad was supposed to be humorous in nature, it has offended many people, especially Westerners, with many taking to social media platforms to complain.
The airline has since issued an apology, and will air a second, altered version of the spot soon.
What do you think—should the airline be more sensitive when it comes to depicting other races, or are people overreacting?
