London's World War II Air Raid Shelter Repurposed As A Vegetable Farm
By Loke Shi Ying, 16 Feb 2014
London-based startup Zero Carbon Food has launched an exciting new agriculture project in the city of London called Growing Underground.
Growing Underground utilizes a vacant World War II underground air raid shelter beneath the London Underground’s Northern Line to plant vegetables and herbs.
Besides using a unique technology of hydroponics and LED lighting, Growing Underground also prides itself on being a carbon neutral operation, seeking to reduce “food miles”, which refers to the carbon footprint in distance travelled when produce reaches your plate.
The company’s claim is this: “Our method uses virtually no food miles, no pesticides, giving you a longer shelf life.”
