Disturbing Jewelry Made Of Real Human Teeth & Hair
By Dorothy Tan, 05 Mar 2014
Most of us have hair on our heads and teeth in our mouths, which makes them familiar parts of our body—however, if we are asked to wear these teeth and hair not as extensions of ourselves but as jewelry, they take on a very different meaning.
This concept of how the meaning of beauty can be transformed is precisely what Australian artist Polly van der Glas wants to explore with her unconventional line of jewelry that is made with genuine human hair and teeth.
Once part of our bodies and symbols of health and vitality, teeth and hair become grotesque and disturbing when they are used to make jewelry—according to the artist, she is “particularly interested in examining the constructed nature of beauty, particularly the kind of beauty and bodies our culture values”.
On the other hand, while these pieces of jewelry may make you feel uncomfortable, they can also bring to mind the innocence of a childhood that is filled with anticipation for the tooth fairy and day-dreams about long-haired princesses.
Van der Glas’ jewelry collection is available for sale here—would you dare to wear a ring or a necklace that features real human teeth?
