A Beautiful Micro-Garden For Growing Your Own Vegetables Indoors
By Dorothy Tan, 16 May 2014
Urban farming is becoming increasingly popular with city-dwellers, and not just among the hipster crowd—to make it easier for you to grow your own vegetables indoors, in a small space, Berlin-based start-up INFARM has teamed up with Swedish design studio Tomorrow Machine to develop a micro-garden kit.
This micro-garden kit consists of a reusable plastic sheet that can be folded into a lovely, origami-inspired triangular dome, agar agar powder to make the gel-based growing medium and three varieties of organic seeds—it would allow urban farming enthusiasts to grow their own micro-greens at home.
The translucent dome means that you can watch your vegetables grow, from the sprouts to the roots—seeds would take three days to sprout in this mini-greenhouse, and would be ready for harvest in just 5-14 days. There is no need to water the sprouts as they would absorb moisture from the gel.
Another cool feature of this micro-garden is how the agar agar gel can be cut up into six slices and be served directly on the dining table—one can hardly get vegetables that are fresher than this.
INFARM is currently crowdsourcing for funds to turn this concept into a real product on Indiegogo—you can get your very own micro-garden for just 20 Euros.
