After the New Delhi gang rape case in 2012, Shilo Shiv Suleman started ‘The Fearless Collective’, a project that lets women speak out against rape culture and misogyny through their illustrations.
Suleman created the first poster, and since then, many Indian artists have contributed to the project.
Many posters show what it is like to live in a patriarchal society, and some have slogans such as “I will not hide my body, my spirit, my existence”. Another poster alludes to the Hindu goddess Shakti, showing that women are strong by nature and should not be treated as objects.
This project is a way for many women to express how they feel about living in a patriarchal society, especially one in which women are not allowed to speak—Suleman urges not just Indian women, but the global community to speak out against misogyny so that women can live in a safer world.
Have a look at these empowering illustrations below, or check out Suleman’s Facebook page to view the entire collection.
