Couple Texted Each Other Using Only Emojis For 30 Days
By Valerie Chang, 18 Aug 2014
Ever wondered if it is possible to communicate without words?
WNYC’s New Tech City senior producer Alex Goldmark and his girlfriend Liza put that to the test by texting using only emojis for 30 days.
The couple of almost two years downloaded all the different emoji apps before they embarked on their experiment using messaging app WeChat. They also settled on some basic visual vocabulary—Goldmark represented by a boy in a helmet, while Liza chose a girl emoji.
Goldmark said he found himself conveying more emotions and sending a lot more “cheesy affectionate messages”, like the use of the heart emoji.
But it got tricky when trying to send messages that are not so straight-forward, such as an instance where Liza tried telling Goldmark about the passing of a family member of a friend, as seen in the image above.
Liza concluded in an interview with WNYC that emojis are “great for the love stuff, but way worse for grocery shopping, logistics, anything without context.”
