An Innovative Billboard That Produces Fresh Lettuce & Clean Air For Residents
By Jillian Wong, 27 Mar 2015
Peruvian university UTEC and agency FCB Mayo Peru, who previously created an air-purifying billboard and a billboard that produces drinking water from air in Peru, are back with a billboard that grows fresh, organic lettuce.
Dubbed the ‘Air Orchard’, the huge hydroponic billboard sucks water from the air through 10 large dehumidifiers. It produces over 2,800 heads of lettuce a week, which are given away to passers-by.
The billboard, which is situated along Peru’s largest highway, also produces 96 liters of drinking water daily.
It’s the latest effort from the university to showcase its engineering capabilities by solving real-world problems, in this case, growing food free from pollution.
The high level of pollution in Peru means that farms in the area are irrigated with water which comes from rivers polluted with arsenic, lead, and cadmium.
The agency also released a study showing that hydroponically grown vegetables have five times as much nutrients as those grown in soil.
