HIV-Positive Man Invites People To Touch Him In Social Experiment
By John Yong, 29 Jun 2015
The physical act of touching someone with HIV is still considered a taboo in certain parts in the world. To combat this stigma, a Finnish man named ‘Janne’ conducted the following social experiment.
Janne—who is HIV-positive—stood with arms outstretched and eyes closed in a busy city square. Placed next to him were two signs saying, “I am HIV-positive. Touch me”—an invitation to passers-by.
Initially, passers-by were hesitant and walked away without giving him a second look, but eventually, some people came up to Janne to hold his hand and pat him on the shoulder—some even gave him a warm embrace.
Moved by their compassion and humility, Janne was brought to tears by the end of the video.
