The 2020 Tokyo Olympics Logo Gets Embroiled In Plagiarism Controversy
By Yap Yen, 30 Jul 2015
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics has recently unveiled its new logo for the Games.
Designed by Kenjiro Sano, the logo is filled with symbolism. According to the official press release from the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the black central column represents diversity as the combination of all colors. The circle shape signifies an inclusive world where everyone accepts one other. The red of the circle symbolizes the power of every beating heart.
However, some Twitter users have pointed out that the this logo is uncannily similar to the logo of the Théâtre de Liège in Belgium, which has been around since 2013—some have even gone so far as to call it “plagarism”.
Take a look at both the logos below—what do you think?
