For Designers: A Useful Guide To Understanding Color Theory
By Yap Yen, 09 Sep 2015
Color is important in any brand’s visual identity, in setting the tone, attracting attention and evoking emotions. For designers, your choice of colors will determine how logos, campaigns or websites are perceived by the public.
Creative Boom has recently shared their ‘Essential Colour Guide for Designers: Understanding Colour Theory’, which covers topics like primary, secondary and tertiary colors and color harmony using the color wheel as a starting point.
The guide also discusses the meaning behind six main primary and secondary colors, using famous brand logos as examples. For instance, yellow is the “color of sunshine” and brings joy, happiness and energy. It is used to promote products and services in the leisure and children’s toy industry. Brands like McDonald’s and Chupa Chups successfully use yellow in their logos, but designers should not use them for high-end goods or services lest it is seen as being too light-hearted and almost childish.
