Intriguing Short Stories Composed With Example Sentences From The Dictionary
By Louise Jane Cher, 28 Sep 2015
When you do a search in the dictionary, you will find example sentences that demonstrate the use of these words.
San Francisco-based creative Jez Burrows has brilliantly strung a series of example sentences together, to form short ‘Dictionary Stories’ that are surprisingly coherent and compelling.
He uses example sentences from the New Oxford American Dictionary, specifically the Dictionary.app on OS X, adding only underlines for the specific words that spawned the sentences, and punctuation to link them together.
The idea came about when Burrows noticed that the sentences were “either weirdly specific or unexpectedly poignant.”
According to The Washington Post, Burrows trawls through the dictionary for sentences with story-telling potential. As he collects sentences, the stories slowly build up.
These stories are published on the Dictionary Stories website, while striking sentences that don’t fit anywhere can be found on its Twitter account.
