Microbiologist Recreates Van Gogh's ‘Starry Night’ With Bacteria In Petri Dishes

At its first ever Agar Art competition, the American Society of Microbiology took their labwork into the gallery, challenging microbiologists from around the world to assemble ingredients such as yeast, proteins and bacteria to form works of art.
Having received 85 submissions in total, the participants were judged on their creativity, design and presentation. Among the impressive petri dish artworks was Missouri microbiologist Melanie Sullivan's rendition of Van Gogh's Starry Night, which is interestingly composed of a bacteria that is a common cause for Urinary Tract Infections.
