Artist Records Events Around The US With Fun Illustrated One-Dollar Notes
By Louise Jane Cher, 09 Nov 2015
Amsterdam-based art director Babo Schokker has came up with an interesting way of recording his daily experiences, while he was in the US during an exchange program.
Schokker kept a diary consisting of illustrations on one-dollar notes—featuring quirky drawings around the portrait of George Washington, contextualizing them to suit the various events that he had experienced.
For example, a Halloween entry shows Washington with macabre make-up, a beach entry shows him sporting a really bad sun burn, and a selfie during a visit to the ‘Cloud Gate’ sculpture in Chicago.
Schokker was inspired to create the dollar diary as he wanted to aptly capture his experience in New York City. He felt like “one of many who came to the city to bust his ass, work hard and make their dreams come true.”
He added that, “all dreams seemed to boil down to first having enough money to survive.” This made dollar bills not only symbolic of the value of money, but also his life at that time.
