Six Unique Lightsabers Inspired By Dieter Rams, Eames And Other Design Heroes
By Yap Yen, 23 Nov 2015
During a lunch session at San Francisco and Austin-based design and research firm Y Studios, a passion project mashing together Star Wars lightsabers and notable design heroes was born.
The passion project called the Design x Saber project, saw lightsabers designed to suit the likes of Zaha Hadid, Charles and Ray Eames, Issey Miyake, Edith Heath and Dieter Rams.
Greatly inspired by the vision, courage and passion of these creative minds, the team at Y Studios put themselves in their heads to visualize what they would do if they were to design their own lightsaber. This included research on the background of each designer and a deep look into their famous and most inspiring works, which was then used to sketch initial concepts of what each saber would look like. They were able to refine the details further in CAD, foam modeling and 3D-printing.
The initial plan was to build all six lightsabers for an exhibition and to auction them off for charity. The team has only built one prototype so far, and will continue to build the other five lightsabers over some time.
