Intricate, Delicate Rice Paper Cutouts Show The Chaotic Nature Of Relationships

We previously featured the intricate rice paper cutouts of Bovey Lee.
Her recent cross-country move from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles has inspired her to create more delicate, hand-cut paper works that feature winding rollercoasters in an intricate web of twists and turns. I
Instead of rendering these scenes on rice paper using a pen or paintbrush, Lee “draws with a knife”, featuring a lone figure engaged in a balancing act—surfing or walking on a tightrope—as a symbol of the often complex, dramatic and lopsided relationships people have with others and with nature. Her paper cutouts also showcase the beauty, energy and richness that is present in such chaotic relationships.
Her collection of paper cutouts, titled Divertical will be on exhibition at the Gavlak gallery in Los Angeles from 9 January 2016.
