Artist Cuts And Paints Wooden Blocks To Resemble Beautiful Gemstones
By Louise Jane Cher, 12 Jan 2016
California-based artist Victoria Wagner has been working on a series called ‘Woodrocks’, that makes wooden gemstones out of large pieces of wood.
Each piece takes the form of a modular, roughly cut stone. Some facets of the wooden “gem” are painted with multilayered gradients that resemble natural hues like sunsets, while others are left unpainted to showcase the natural woodgrain angles.
She often leaves a part of the wooden “stone” raw and uncut, highlighting the organic material underneath the geometric form. This unlikely pairing of wood and stone is something that fascinates Wagner, as it confuses the senses and allows for “optical engagement and a perceptual unpredictability”.
