Futuristic Dress Adorned With 40 Fabric Butterflies That Can Flutter And Fly
By Melissa Goh, 20 Jan 2016
Introducing ‘The Butterfly Dress’, a futuristic smart dress that is adorned with 40 fabric butterflies that can flutter and fly when its sensors are activated.
Designed by Turkish designers and sisters Ezra Çetin and Tuba Çetin, of design label Ezra + Tuba, the dress is made from jacquard interwoven metallic Lurex fibers, and embedded with proximity sensors, powered by Intel.
The butterflies start off by flapping slowly, then more fervently, until they are released and dramatically launched when a person comes close, or when released via a mobile device.
Ezra said, “We look forward to becoming the first luxury designer label in the world to really use wearable technology concepts in our collections as a whole, not just a one-shot or a hiatus”.
More innovative projects are in the line, they include color- and pattern-changing fabrics that will harvest the kinetic energy from the wearer’s movement, using 3D printing to create tailor-made pieces.
