Stunning, Dramatic Landscapes Expertly Carved Out Of Books
By Louise Jane Cher, 25 Jan 2016
Montreal-based artist Guy Laramée, known for carving glorious landscapes out of books, returns with new works.
The series titled ‘Onde Eles Moram (Where They Live)’, is an ode to the magnificent birds of southern Brazil. Captivated by their diversity and liveliness during his travels there, he created a set of nine book sculptures featuring various birds.
Each sculpture comes with a portrait of a bird painted on the outside, while its natural habitat is carved from the book’s inner pages. The books themselves are classic works of literature acquired second-hand from bookstores within Brazil, and he often combines a few of them to create a larger canvas to carve out from.
Laramée hopes that his works can show how men and birds are worlds apart—while we transform nature into objects that alienate us, birds are able to exist in the “freshness of the moment” and be able to sing. Through them, he wishes to let people rediscover their “intimate relationship to the world.”
