In criticism of Europe’s response to the refugee crisis, elusive graffiti artist Banksy has chosen the French embassy in London to be his latest canvas.
The artwork appeared overnight on Saturday, and depicts a crying girl from the film and musical Les Misérables. It also features an open cylinder of CS gas and smoke clouding her bottom half. The piece appears to be in reference to the use of tear gas at a refugee camp in Calais, during an attempt to evict an estimated 1500 refugees.
The artwork presented a new, interactive element previously unheard of in the history of Banksy’s graffiti work—a stencilled QR code at the corner of the piece that is linked to an online video of the police raid on the camp on 5 January 2016.
