Having monitored the design trends that have been popular over the past few years, the creative team at Canva has put together a selection that gives you an idea about the shifts in the industry and offer you insights into what could be big this year.

Taking cues from the design aesthetics of the early 1900s through the 60s, some of the more brilliant reproductions include a playful, contemporary twist that pay tribute to vintage stylistic influences. Examples include pixel art and space themes that bring back the nostalgia of the first PCs and video games, as well as patterns and textiles that are distinctly derived from the 80s.

When Google first introduced its material design guidelines, it kickstarted an exciting slew of design projects with formats that incorporate material design principles such as bold colors, large type and light and shadow effects. Sometimes referred to as “Flat 2.0,” material design is considered an updated version of the flat design trend.

Dramatic typography has risen in popularity over the years as it goes beyond delivering a message, making a memorable statement with its experimentation in size, color, texture and arrangement. One great example is renowned Swedish creative agency, Snask’s cover art for The Washington Post’s Readers’ Favourites Issue, which encompassed a variety of letters handmade from different materials.
