Always’ New ‘#LikeAGirl’ Ad Confronts Stereotypical, Limiting Girl Emojis
By Yoon Sann Wong, 04 Mar 2016
P&G’s feminine beauty brand Always is back with a new commercial under its highly successful ‘#LikeAGirl’ campaign.
The fresh entry challenges the presently available gender-based emojis that limit how girls can accurately express themselves.
The spot, titled ‘Girl Emojis’, has a group of female teenagers commenting on the variety of ideograms offered on the visual keyboard. It ends with the brand inviting viewers to share what girl emojis they would want to see available.
“There’s no girl-professional emojis, unless you call being a bride a profession,” comments one girl, while another says, “You’ve got boys biking, playing basketball...none of the girls are doing this.”
Michele Baeten, global associate brand director for Always explained, “Our vision is that when a girl picks up the phone, in a couple of months, she’ll have an array of options that represent professions and sports and activities that girls do…Their only choices shouldn’t be pink and manicures and hair.”
