Old Spice Outdoes Itself With New Mashup Ad That Could Be Its Oddest Yet
By Yoon Sann Wong, 07 Jun 2016
Old Spice has brought us some queer but belly-tickling ads in the past, specifically the series featuring Terry Crews and Isaiah Mustafa.
The brand’s latest ‘Horrifying Mutant Nightmare Abomination (Remix)’ commercial, however, is an odd combination comprising two of its former ads that more or less lives up to its title.
Wieden + Kennedy Portland teamed up with video artist Nick DenBoer to produce the mashup.
Jason Kreher, creative director at Wieden + Kennedy explained that inspiration for the remix came about while the team was combing through some contracts. It became apparent that they still retained usage rights for some of the 2015 commercials.
“We’d all seen Nick’s work from Conan, but right during this period of time he released The Chickening, which is amazing,” commented Kreher. “We worked with him for about three weeks, and every version got better and funnier and weirder. He is obviously a video genius, but he also composed the song. … The stuff he was able to create using assets from just two commercials seemed impossible.”
