Patriotic People Are Shocked To Find Out Where Their Ancestors Come From
By Sophia Hyder, 28 Jun 2016
Danish travel site Momondo teamed up with DNA testing service AncestryDNA, ad agency &Co, and production house Bacon to reveal the heritage of 67 individuals.
‘The DNA Journey’ has become a viral hit, with over six million views on its main video. The videos follow the diverse individuals who, for the most part, are fairly certain about their ancestry and hold rather strong opinions on other nationalities (“I’m not a fan of the Germans”, “I have this side of me that hates Turkish people. Not people, but the government!").
Most of their opinions are turned on their heads when the results of their DNA test reveal their true lineage.
The man who isn’t a fan of Germans, Jay, turns out to be 5% German. The woman who hates the Turkish government is actually part Turkish.
The videos are part of an ongoing Momondo contest that encourages participants to send in their DNA samples for a chance at trips to the countries of their origin, worth $17,000. Runners-up will be sent to one of the countries of their origin.
In this day, the world is more interconnected than we realize. Travel and tracing our heritage, as the videos try to point out, might help to open our minds. As one of the subjects, Aurelie, says, “There would be no such thing as extremism in the world if people knew their heritage."
&Co creative director Robert Cerkez tells Adweek, “When done right, traveling can break down our mental borders. If we are open the world, it can change the way we look at others—and ourselves.”
