Watch: The Ugly Truth Of Magazines Filled With Ads, Unrealistic Beauty Standards
By Dorothy Tan, 03 Oct 2016
YouTuber and online personality Oskar T. Brand recently shared a video that reveals some ugly and uncomfortable things about fashion and beauty magazines that you may not be aware of, even if you read them regularly.
This disturbing video started off by investigating the number of ad pages found in two of such magazines—it turns out that 65% to 85% of these magazines are made up of advertisements or sponsored content.
It then goes on to look at how the content in these magazines affect female readers—by projecting unreaslitic expectations of how the female body should look like, they have a devastating effect on the self-esteem and body perception of the women who read them.
For instance, it highlighted the staggering amount to photo-editing that images in these magazines receive—in fact, H&M has recently admitted to using computer-generated body pictures in their ads, which means that the perfect bodies featured in them do not even exist in real life.
Watch the video below to find out more about “the ugly truth” hidden in beauty and fashion magazines—do you read them, and if you do, would you continue to read them?
