Kickstarter Features Its First Sex Toy Ever: A Nifty, Innovative Finger Vibrator
By Yoon Sann Wong, 04 Nov 2016
Prior to ‘Fin’–a versatile, wearable sex toy by Dame Products–crowd funding platform Kickstarter had never featured a sex toy.
The creators behind ‘Fin’ previously launched ‘Eva’–a hands-free vibrator for couples–on Indiegogo. Feedback from ‘Eva’ motivated Dame Products founders Alexandra Fine and Janet Lieberman to create a convenient and handy device that could produce vibrations to the wearer’s fingers.
“We wanted users to be able to bend their fingers easily, which is hard to do with other finger vibrators, and take it on and off super-quickly,” explained the founders to Cosmopolitan.
‘Fin’ is a vibrator that’s held between the fingers and comes with a detachable tether that can be used based on personal preference. “Fin lacks hindrances like cords and battery packs, which can kill the mood.”
Pitching the idea to Kickstarter, however, was tricky. Fine explained, “We spent a long time drafting an email to Kickstarter, outlining that we are product developers and makers just like any other creator they allow onto their platform…we’re in the same community of entrepreneurs in Brooklyn, we work down the street from one another, and we’ve proven we can deliver. We felt that if they were ever going to allow a sex toy onto their platform, it had to be ours.”
While its not in Kickstarter’s official policy to exclude sex toys, the platform does have an official stance on prohibiting ‘pornographic material’ and has rejected every other sex toy proposal prior to ‘Fin’.
According to Motherboard, this could be due to its former partnership with Amazon Payments, which bans “adult oriented products and services”.
Kickstarter has since switched to the more sex toy-friendly Stripe but remains selective on the projects that are featured on the platform.
Justin Kazmark, Kickstarter’s vice president of communications, explained, “Dame is making something new and innovative, and in that spirit we’re happy to welcome them to Kickstarter…we’ll continue to allow projects like this on a case-by-case basis.”
