IKEA Could Not Be More Abrupt In Selling Its Product Than In Its Poignant New Ad
By Yoon Sann Wong, 30 Nov 2016
A teenage daughter has had a rough day; her father patiently listens to her lament on the other side of her locked bedroom door. Similar scenes play on in IKEA’s touching new spot titled ‘Good Listener’ by Sweden-based agency Åkestam Holst.
Finally, the daughter opens the bolted door. She peers out to see her father’s warm, welcoming face when suddenly, you are introduced to ‘Oddvar’ stool–on which the father is perched–going for only 79 Swedish krona (US$8.50).
No doubt this is a lovely spot save for the sudden stool-sell that spoils its closing scene. Curiously though, if a father has to hear his daughter pour her heart out, which one would assume could take some time–wouldn’t it be appealing to sit on a more comfortable IKEA chair? Say, one with a backrest?
