Brilliantly Minimal, Drop-Proof Packaging Keeps Lightbulbs Safe From Falls
By Dorothy Tan, 27 Mar 2017

Shaunak Patel, a student at the Unitedworld Institute of Design in India, received a brief to “design a bulb packaging that prevents a bulb from damaging when subjected to free-fall from a height of five feet” for a school project.
His solution to this design problem is ingenious in its simplicity—it consists of a single strip of cardboard that wraps around the bulb.
With this packaging design, the product is on clear display while also being protected—according to the designer, as damage from drops usually occur when customers try to remove the lightbulb from its box to check on its condition, allowing them to ensure the quality of the product without having to remove it from the packaging would minimize such accidents.
The packaging is designed to withstand drops from up to five feet as most shelves in stores stand at this height.
