Forever 21’s Latest Feud With A Creative Involves A Supposedly Stolen Typeface
By Izza Sofia, 30 May 2017
Fast fashion retailer Forever 21 has a reputation for ripping off the designs of other brands. This time, it is musician Frank Ocean who is taking issue with them about copyright.
After it was pointed out that the store’s “Pop-Up Shop” sign bore a striking resemblance to the font used on Ocean’s 2016 album Blonde, the singer responded in a Tumblr post.
Frank shared the photo of the store front with the caption “😳 uhh”, as well as a hashtag that read “#cease&desist” on his Tumblr. The post is still visible, but it has been edited just to show the emoji.
Redditors pointed out that the font looks to be a customised version of ‘Futura Bold Italic’. Although the font was custom-made for Ocean, it is not considered as intellectual property and Ocean is not able to make legal claims even if Forever 21 did steal his typeface.
Take a look at how similar the two fonts look below.
