In China, A School Where You Can Study To Become A Social Media Influencer
By Kylie Woon, 21 Jun 2017
Just a few hours’ drive from Shanghai, in the much smaller city of Yiwu, China, a group of around 30 young women are studying to become the next big Chinese internet stars, or ‘wanghong’.
They are students at the Yiwu Industrial & Commercial College, and are enrolled in a course specifically designed to turn students into online influencers.
In the school's models and etiquette program, the students learn how to pose, understand photo and video development, cultivate a fashion sense, apply make-up and conduct themselves with poise. The end goal? To look great on social media.
This may seem at odds with a college setting, but there are genuine career prospects for the students enrolled in the course. There are a staggering 700 million smartphone users in China, Asia One reports, leading to enormous growth in the e-commerce industry.
According to reports from internet consultancy Analysys International, in the third quarter of 2016, China’s social media industry raked in over US$930 million.
That means that there is a lot of money to be made for the wanghong who can actually make it. In a country of 1.3 billion, it is little wonder that these students are looking for a leg up in the race to become the next big thing online.
