A Modern, Sophisticated Comic Sans For ‘People Who Hate Comic Sans’
By Dorothy Tan, 29 Jun 2017
Renowned typo designer Jonathan Hoefler of Hoefler & Co. recently released a new typeface family named ‘Inkwell’ that will remind you of a world famous typeface—the Comic Sans.
However, despite the resemblance, the differences between the two are also obvious—according to Hoefler, while Comic Sans come across as “informal and amateurish”, Inkwell is designed to be “informal but proficient”.
He explains that while handwriting-inspired fonts are very popular, most of them come in just a single weight, which makes them limiting—to create a sophisticated handwriting typeface, he has created Inkwell’s “tiny universe of fonts” that includes both serif and sans serif versions, four decorative fonts and even a blackletter.
Several of the fonts in the Inkwell family are based on the handwriting of real people—for instance, the serif font is inspired by Hoefler’s own block handwriting.
You can check out the Inkwell typeface family—which “brings the classical needs of a typographer to [the genre of handwriting fonts]”—here, and read more about it on Fast Co. Design.
Do you agree that this is an improved, more refined version of Comic Sans—and do you like it?
