Spot The Photoshopped Images In This Eye-Opening ‘Fake News’ Quiz
By Kylie Woon, 25 Jul 2017
Fake news is one of the internet’s biggest concerns at the moment. Image alteration can even be done on the smartphone, and learning how to manipulate photographs can easily be done through online tutorials.
Some cases of faked imagery are distasteful, but not overtly harmful—like the case of the Instagram influencer who deceived her followers by Photoshopping herself into envy-inducing travel destinations across the globe.
But when it comes to news, faked images—like Trump’s fake TIME covers—are a threat to journalistic integrity and damage trust in news providers.
The University of Warwick’s recent research led by Sophie Nightingale of the Department of Psychology shows that a third of all photo manipulations enter public spaces unnoticed, even though the tension surrounding fake news are at all time highs.
To test the public’s ability to discern fake news from real, the University put out a quiz, featuring a collection of seemingly normal images. However—many of them are fake. The unnerving part is, the images are all so normal-looking, and spotting the fakes is no easy feat—highlighting just how insidious fake news can be.
How adept are you at spotting a faked image? Test your skills by taking the quiz right here.
