Facebook AR Glasses Have Been Quietly Patented

Facebook announced its plans to delve into virtual and augmented reality during the F8 Developer Conference earlier this year, and last week a patent was discreetly published for a pair of AR glasses.
The patent—filed by Facebook subsidiary Oculus VR—is for a pair of glasses that resemble the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers in style, and will be able to transmit optical and audio elements to a wearer in addition to what is already observable in the real world.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg stressed during the F8 that augmented reality will be an exciting—and significant—part of Facebook’s future. Despite the glasses having only just been patented, he even discussed AR contact lenses during his talk—and a world where information and content is overlaid on top of reality, making sharing more powerful than ever.
This would make many things—education and entertainment, for example—digital rather than physical, which may make them more accessible and affordable.
