The Volkswagen ‘Hippie Bus’ Is Making An Electric Comeback
By Kylie Woon, 22 Aug 2017
The Volkswagen Type 2—better known as the ‘hippie bus’—is synonymous with peace, love, and the hippie counterculture movement of the 1960s. And now, the highly popular classic is making a fabulous comeback.
In an announcement made by Volkswagen, the iconic bus will hit American, Chinese, and European markets by 2022. “Our goal is clear: we want to make the fully electric, fully connected car a bestseller around the world. The iconic car of the electric age must be a Volkswagen,” read the announcement.
Called the I.D. Buzz, concept imagery shows off a groovy lime-green electric vehicle that will seat eight, offer near-panoramic views thanks to ample windows, and offer the same front-trunk as its Woodstock-era older brother, the Type 2. It is not difficult to imagine sunshine-filled road trips with the I.D. Buzz.
The bus will utilize the VW fast-charge system, and can “recharge about 80% of its energy capacity in 30 minutes at 150kW.” An environment-friendly version of a classic bus—is there a better way to celebrate peace and love?
