Global design company IDEO started out developing breakthrough products that have evolved to become some of the most commonly used devices of today. These include hard drives and the first notebook-style computer.
One of IDEO’s greatest milestones happened in 1980, when Steve Jobs approached the company to design a computer mouse—costing about US$400 at the time—that was affordable and easy-to-use for the masses. IDEO succeeded in bringing the staggering price tag down to just US$35.
By then, IDEO had already made a name for itself—but it was only until two decades later that it started designing experiences rather than products. The company follows a four-step process to tackling its most challenging problems; this encompasses observing, idea making, prototyping, and testing.
In this collaborative video by Vox and TED, IDEO’s President and CEO Tim Brown breaks down the process and describes how human-centered design plays into the way the firm solves complex problems. Watch it below.
