NASA Audio Reveals What Space Sounds Like And It’s Both Creepy Yet Fascinating
By Yoon Sann Wong, 01 Nov 2017
You might’ve seen your fair share of galactic-themed films from Alien to The Martian, or viewed NASA’s out-of-this-world photo library and astronaut Scott Kelly’s mesmerizing photos captured from space. While these give you a broad idea of what space looks like, they don’t satisfy the question: what does it truly sound like?
In a new playlist on SoundCloud, NASA released an audio collection that will fascinate you with its range of diverse noises gathered from outer space.
For instance, the first track, ‘Juno: Crossing Jupiter’s Bow Shock’, exudes a psychedelic feel, while track number four, ‘Kepler: Star KIC7671081B Light Curve Waves to Sound’, sounds like it could belong to a buildup scene in thriller Alien. Meanwhile track number 20, ‘Beware of Jupiter’s Largest Moon Ganymede’, could almost pass off as noises from the jungle.
“Some spacecraft have instruments capable of capturing radio emissions. When scientists convert these to sound waves, the results are eerie to hear,” explained NASA in the playlist’s introduction.
