Google Shipped New Pixel 2 XL Phones Without Android Installed
By Izza Sofia, 03 Nov 2017
Some people who are buying Google’s new Pixel 2 XL smartphone are receiving the device without the operating system Android installed.
Multiple reports on Reddit, such as one that was posted as recent as last night, show users who have gotten brand new Pixel 2 XLs, just missing the Android software. Upon first boot, the device simply says that it “can’t find valid operating system” and cannot go any further.
Android is the software that powers the entire phone. This would be akin to an iPhone arriving without iOS installed. Users state that the phones display a “No Valid OS” message when powered on.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to get the OS installed on these devices once in the customer’s hands, so the only method to fix this is to replace the device, which Google is thankfully doing. If you are running into the problem, you can start a claim with Google here.
The Pixel 2 XL has been plagued by issues since launch. Users reported hearing high-frequency noises, which can be alleviated by turning off NFC. Additionally, the quality of the display has been called into question and is prone to leaving digital scars of software on the screen, otherwise known as “burn in.”
