Starbucks’ latest move isn’t at all a half-baked idea. The coffee chain has announced the opening of its first Princi bakery and cafe in the US, located at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle.
The new menu additions hail from the recipes of renowned Italian baker Rocco Princi, whom Starbucks says has amassed a cult following in Milan and London’s Soho, thanks to his personal motto of baking fresh breads slowly and authentically.
“Rocco Princi is an artisan who, at an early age, discovered a love of bread making and through determination as well as an obsession for finding the perfect ingredients, has created an Italian food experience that I think is unparalleled,” explains executive chairman Howard Schultz.
“His passion for authentic food and respect for Milanese culture come through in everything he does, and I think our customers are going to fall in love with Princi.”
The menu includes over 100 items—“from flaky cornetti to focaccia sandwiches filled with salame Milano and mozzarella di bufala or crostata fragola.” The additions are also made using ingredients imported straight from Italy.
Currently, the pastries are only available at the Seattle Roastery, but Starbucks intends to roll the range out internationally. You can expect the aroma of fresh bread to waft through Shanghai’s Roastery in 2017 and Milan’s store in late 2018. The collaboration will expand to New York, Tokyo, and Chicago thereafter.
