Earlier this week, a photo featuring a young black model in a hoodie with the words, “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle” was uploaded to the British arm of H&M’s online catalog, and it did not sit well with many, especially Grammy-winning artiste The Weeknd.
The Canadian singer expressed how he was “deeply offended” and announced that he was cutting ties with the brand, after working together for an 18-collection piece last year.
The image spread through social media, resulting in much backlash, with many Twitter users called the fashion retailer racist.
Many celebrities also expressed outrage. Basketball superstar LeBron James, recording artist Chris Classic, American rappers T.I. and Azalea Banks, all reposted via Instagram an edited photo of the original with the words, “KING OF THE WORLD” and a crown that sits atop the original text on the apparel.
Banks declared that she would boycott the brand and wrote inside her Instagram post, “People are always trying to fuck around on black people’s time, and it’s just a bit corny at this point. I don’t have to protest; just stop buying H&M.”
T.I. tagged H&M inside his post with the message, “I think this is what you meant to print.”
“Put some respect on it!!” artist Diddy wrote. “When you look at us, make sure you see royalty and supernatural God-sent glory!! Anything else is disrespectful.”
H&M has apologized and removed the photo from its website. The brand also posted an apology via its official Instagram, shown below.
Following The Weeknd’s critique over the brand’s actions comes news that American rapper G-Eazy—who was developing a line with the brand for launch in March—was also severing ties with H&M.
@hm u got us all wrong! And we ain't going for it! Straight up! Enough about y'all and more of what I see when I look at this photo. I see a Young King!! The ruler of the world, an untouchable Force that can never be denied! We as African Americans will always have to break barriers, prove people wrong and work even harder to prove we belong but guess what, that's what we love because the benefits at the end of the road are so beautiful!! #LiveLaughLove❤️ #LoveMyPeople🤴🏾👸🏾👨🏾⚖️👩🏾⚖️

Sidebar : good thing they aren’t part of a group so we can just boycott them and keep our way of life LOL 😂

I made this because I dont wanna see this young Kings face anymore with the shirt he was hired to wear by H&M. I'm almost certain the Persson Family and their $31 Billion wont care in Sweden but... this lil guy will see his pics and the mockery one day because the internet doesnt erase... so I just hope he gets to see this one or any like it that celebrate him. #mysavoirfaire
