‘Sophia’ The Robot Gets A Pair Of Legs, Takes Her First Steps Forward This 2018
By Yoon Sann Wong, 12 Jan 2018
World’s first robot citizen ‘Sophia’ isn’t going to let critique by Facebook’s AI chief—who called out the humanoid cyborg as “complete bullshit”—stop her this 2018.
The robot, which previously existed solely from the waist and above, has taken a step forward this year—literally—with a fresh pair of legs.
The android’s creator, Hanson Robotics, announced its partnership with Rainbow Robotics—commercial spinoff of Kaist Hubo Lab—and Drones and Autonomous Systems Lab at CES 2018.
The collaboration aims to integrate ‘Sophia’ with the ‘DRC-HUBO’ body, which won the ‘DARPA Robotics Challenge’ in 2015.
“Giving ‘Sophia’ a more complete and robust embodiment is a key part of our ongoing, rapidly accelerating quest to supply her and our other Hanson robots with general intelligence at the human level and ultimately beyond,” explained Hanson Robotics’ chief scientist Dr Ben Goertzel inside a statement.
Hanson Robotics adds, “Integrating ‘Sophia’ with a (robotics) body that can allow her to walk completes her physical form so she can access the full range of human experiences, which will help her learn to live and walk among us.”
Watch ‘Sophia’ go places in the demonstration video below.
