CoverGirl Features Model With Vitiligo For The First Time In Its Latest Campaign
By Izza Sofia, 21 Feb 2018
Brands are finally waking up from the unrealistic beauty standards that alienates those who do not have a porcelain complexion.
Today, that comes in the form of CoverGirl’s latest campaign film, which features the brand’s TruBlend Liquid Makeup. The spot features Amy Deanna, a black model with Vitiligo, a condition that causes skin to lose pigment cells.
In the latest campaign, titled “I Am What I Make Up,” includes an advert featuring Amy Deanna promoting the TruBlend Foundation.
The film begins with Deanna applying foundation to even out her Vitiligo patches around her chin before highlighting her naturally lighter parts of her skin with a fair shade of foundation around her eyes.
“Vitiligo awareness is something that is very important to me,” the model says about her campaign. “Being given a platform to do so means so much. At the end of the day I am just like everyone else, I just happen to have spots. It’s a part of my identity, but it doesn’t define who I am. For there to be so many of us and so little representation, it’s truly disheartening. I work with CoverGirl; I’m a black woman; I have vitiligo. That is empowering.”
“I’m thankful to take part in this. It’s surreal,” she tells People. “I believe that inclusiveness will challenge unrealistic beauty standards within the beauty industry and in humanity.”
“We have to be more inclusive. Diversity is important,” she tells People. “Representation is important. Inclusivity is important—not just for people of different backgrounds and ethnicities, but also people of all sizes. That’s why I was so excited to partner with CoverGirl on this project.”
“Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, etc. Let’s face it, together we are a mosaic—that in itself is beautiful. We should celebrate that.”
