Holy cow. Following the colorless “milk tea” that confused people’s vision and taste buds, Japanese beverage maker Suntory has announced another dairy-inspired drink that’s probably more mindboggling than the former.
The ‘Blueberry Yogurina’ is a sweet and sour blueberry-flavored beverage that promises a rich mouth-feel similar to drinkable yogurt—despite looking like water.
You might be intrigued to learn that the product surprisingly contains real fruit. In order to achieve its transparence, the brand uses the unsaturated extract of blueberries from a local farm to flavor the drink—fruit juice would taint its appearance.
For “creaminess,” Suntory uses whey, a milk-derived ingredient, to recreate “the intense flavor of yogurt and cultured drinks.”
The ‘Blueberry Yogurina’ will debut at major retailers and convenience stores across Japan on 6 March 2018, and will be sold at JP¥131 (US$1.20) in a 19-oz bottled form. A 9-oz version can also be purchased exclusively from vending machines at JP¥115 (US$1.10).
