MIT Announces Its ‘10 Breakthrough Technologies Of 2018’

Since 2001, MIT has released its annual ‘10 Breakthrough Technologies’ list comprising innovations predicted to have far-reaching influence on people’s lives.
Its 2018 edition, which has been published online for its March/April 2018 issue, looks at technologies on the verge of becoming commercially available, as well as those that have not yet attained widespread use.

1. 3-D Metal Printing
Breakthrough: Machines can now 3-D print metal objects quickly and affordably.
Why it matters: The ability to create large, intricate metal objects on demand could transform the manufacturing industry.

2. Artificial Embryos
Breakthrough: Scientists have discovered a way to create embryo-like structures solely from stem cells.

3. Sensing City
Breakthrough: Project ‘Quayside’ in Toronto strives to become the first metropolitan neighborhood that marries cutting-edge urban design with advanced digital technology.
Why it matters: Smart cities could help make such areas more eco-friendly, comfortable, and affordable to live in.

4. Artificial Intelligence For All
Breakthrough: Cloud-based AI makes technology more affordable, accessible and convenient to use.
Why it matters: While AI remains dominated by several companies at present, transforming it into a cloud-based service would increase accessibility to this technology and possibly enhance the economy.

5. Competing Neural Networks
Breakthrough: Pitting two AI systems against each other to create extremely realistic, original visuals and sounds is something that’s never been done before.
Why it matters: Empowering machines with this “sense of creativity” makes them less dependent on humans. It does, however, transform them into powerful tools for digital manipulation.
