Airbnb’s logo has been scrutinized thoroughly ever since it rebranded in 2014. Its “ballsy” symbol has been likened to a logomark from the past, but it has rarely been compared with modern-day branding until recently.
A tweet from book designer Daniel Benneworth-Gray has made its rounds because it points out a similarity that seems to have flown over many people’s heads.
In the post, Benneworth-Gray places Airbnb’s lettermark below the logo of one of the world’s most recognized brands: Adidas. The resemblance is uncanny.
The paralleling typefaces might not be a coincidence. Just recently, another designer’s tweet, where he noted the likeness of leading brand logos, went viral. The reason many companies are minimalizing their visual identity is simple: you need to be seen—and therefore legible—on the world’s interchangeable platforms.
