Apple has cleared some skies from its enigmatic fog through a disclosure that it uses Google’s public cloud to drive its iCloud service.
CNBC reports that the company updated its iOS Security Guide in January, which indicated that it leverages on third-party services like “Google Cloud Platform.”
Previously, Apple cited Amazon Web Services and Microsoft’s Azure as some of the remote data storage systems it uses for iCloud, but it replaced the reference of Microsoft’s service with Google’s in the latest document.
CNBC reached out to Microsoft to enquire about the deleted mention, but the company declined to comment. Apple also did not reply to the publication’s query about when it started relying on Google Cloud Platform.
Various media sources have alleged in the past that Apple piggybacked on Google’s cloud infrastructure business, with one calling the two “strange bedfellows.” However, these were mostly opinions, and Apple had not acknowledged the dependency until recently.
In Google’s earnings call this month, Ruth Porat, Chief Financial Officer at Alphabet and Google, said that the company’s cloud service was a key driver for its quarterly auxilliary revenue of US$1 billion.
