Ask any homebody and they are likely to tell you that they would rather hide under the covers than be out partying—but that doesn’t mean they can’t appreciate a good night portrait.
Here’s some good news if the thought of strangers noticing you during an outdoor photo shoot unnerves you: it’s possible to shoot vivid light displays in the comfort of your own home without spending a single cent.
Manila-based photographer Gab Loste has a few unexpected tricks up his sleeve that will help you create Instagram-worthy nighttime shots in your living room. These include, surprisingly, a television and a CD.
As with most night portraits, you will need a light source. Loste recommends using your television, which can also mimic pretty backdrops like neon signs if you change its wallpaper.
For a more psychedelic effect, you might also want to use a reflective object, such as a disc or a glass prism. This will help create a trippy mirror effect.
Watch the tutorial below to learn how to snap envy-inducing night portraits on a shoestring budget.
