It’s not every day that you come across Microsoft’s founder Bill Gates and legendary singer Sir Elton John reimagined as typefaces. For Copenhagen-based graphic design student Paw Poulsen, these personal works were born from his love for typography and pop culture.
In an interview with It’s Nice That, he explained that to him, pop culture is equivalent to the overall design of everyday life. The attendee at the Danish School of Media and Journalism works primarily with type, either through type design or typographic-based configurations.
Fusing these two passions has given fruition to ‘Bill Font’ and ‘Elton Font’. The neo-grotesque ‘Bill Font’ features a number substitute for particular letters, inspired by ‘leetspeak’. ‘Elton Font’, on the other hand, was inspired by Arabic calligraphy and is a sophisticated typeface that investigates rhythm as well as contrast. Paw explained that similar to John, “the font is informal, performative and musical.”
Perhaps you’ll soon see more celebrities reimagined as typefaces, seeing as how Paw has “Oprah and Paris Hilton font lying around” on his computer.
