After months of speculation, Huawei has laid rumors to rest by officially unveiling its ‘P20 Pro’ smartphone that comes with the world’s first triple-camera system, made especially by esteemed camera brand Leica.
Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ might have held the top spot previously for having the best smartphone camera on market according to DxOMark—a leading industry source for independent image quality measurements and ratings pertaining to smartphones, cameras, and lenses—but the entry of Huawei’s ‘P20 Pro’ has changed the game.
The flagship model, touted as a breakthrough in technology and art to “redefine intelligent photography,” has not only scored the highest overall rating ever at 109—shown in the image below—but also received stellar reviews from DxOMark.
In a recently published statement, DxOMark explained that “in terms of camera tech, [the ‘P20 Pro’] is arguably the most innovative device [it’s] seen in quite some time.”
‘P20 Pro’ camera specs
The camera system boasts the most number of megapixels offered in any one smartphone today. Its 24-megapixel front camera is accompanied by three rear cameras. This includes a 40-megapixel RBG sensor with 27mm f/1.8 lens, a secondary 20-megapixel monochrome sensor with 27mm f/1.6 lens, and last but not least, an 8-megapixel RGB sensor and 80mm f/2.4 lens, with optical image stabilization.
The ‘P20 Pro’ doesn’t slack in low light either because it comes equipped with sensitivity of up to ISO 102,400. It has 5x hybrid zoom so you can capture moments from incredible distances, AI image stabilization for “blur-free, handheld shots in low-light” without any tripod, 960 fps Super Slow Motion, 3D Portrait Lighting that might give the iPhone X’s Portrait Lighting a run for its money, and Master AI so that “[p]rofessional photography skills like lighting and other settings are then automatically adjusted,” and not to mention AI-assisted professional framing.
DxOMark on the ‘P20 Pro’ cameras
“With an overall score of 109 points, the Huawei P20 Pro sets a new benchmark for smartphone cameras on DxOMark.com, outscoring all of its closest rivals, such as the Apple iPhone X, the Google Pixel 2, and the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus by a margin that is close to or higher than 10 points.”
“Much of this is due to the Huawei’s outstanding still image capabilities that earn it an unprecedented Photo score of 114 points. The large sensor in the main camera combined with the B&W sensor allows for excellent low-light performance and class-leading dynamic range; the dedicated 80mm equivalent tele-lens in combination with the high-resolution monochrome chip, delivers the best zoom performance we’ve seen on a smartphone to date. The monochrome chip is also used to help generate the P20 Pro’s excellent bokeh-simulation.”
DxOMark on the ‘P20 Pro’ video capabilities
“And the P20 Pro is no slouch either in video mode, thanks to class-leading image stabilization, a good autofocus, and very low noise levels. At 98 points, it just manages to push the Google Pixel 2 off the number one spot in the video ranking, making the P20 Pro the best all-around mobile device for imaging that money can currently buy.”
“We are used to every new smartphone camera generation being slightly better than the previous one, but looking at the images and test results from the P20 Pro, it seems Huawei has skipped one or two generations. The results are simply that good. The P20 Pro’s triple camera setup is the biggest innovation we have seen in mobile imaging for quite some time and is a real game changer.”
“Being able to pick the best camera for a specific shooting situation and computationally merge the image data from all three sensors means that the new Huawei beats the competition in virtually every category, taking the number one spots in both our Photo and Video rankings. The P20 Pro is particularly good in low light, when zooming, and for bokeh simulation, blowing its direct rivals out of the water. If you are looking for the current best camera in a smartphone, look no further.”
