“Are Coursera courses still free?” is a frequently asked question at Class Central, a search engine for free online courses.
While Coursera courses are free to audit, you’ll have to pay when it comes to graded assignments or obtaining a Course Certificate. Accessing the free courses will require you to select the “Full Course, No Certificate” option upon signing up. The payable courses are under the “audit” selection.
Since Coursera’s a single-page app where the necessary information is only available upon logging in, Dhawal Shah of Class Central has saved you the trouble of browsing through each course one by one to see if it’s free-of-charge.
Shah has conveniently categorized all 1,150 free Coursera courses from roughly 166 universities, including Stanford, Georgia Tech and more, according to their respective topics such as humanities, engineering, and programming, amongst others.
The Art & Design category boasts 68 free courses from universities including Yale and Duke, as well as the Museum of Modern Art.
For instance, there’s the Roman Architecture course from Yale University, Fundamentals of Digital Image and Video Processing from Northwestern University, Ignite Your Everyday Creativity from State University of New York, Modern Art & Ideas, Seeing Through Photographs, and Fashion as Design from The Museum of Modern Art, plus Introduction to User Experience Design from Georgia Institute of Technology.
